The Lie of Deception

There are many insidious veils that plague us, but there are seven that I think hinder us and cast a shadow over our lives – seven veils that deny God’s power.

  1. Veil of Belief
  2. Veil of Pain
  3. Veil of Sin
  4. Veil of Dishonesty
  5. Veil of Deception
  6. Veil of the Psyche
  7. Veil of Intellectualism

Veil of Deception – So he went in to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.” But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” He answered, “Because the Lord your God granted me success.” Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, to know whether you are really my son Esau or not.” So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, who felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands. So he blessed him. He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He answered, “I am.” Genesis 27:18-24

Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my time is completed.” So Laban gathered together all the people of the place and made a feast. But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and he went in to her. . . And in the morning, behold, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?” Genesis 29:21-25

The last sentence of Jacob, “Why then have you deceived me?” is quite ironic. Jacob found himself being deceived in a most grievous way, yet he himself was a deceiver. He deceived his father on his deathbed. There is a lot to this story, but for our purposes let’s simplify it. There is a price for deception. If you allow deception to fill your life, it indeed will fill it. If we in our shortsightedness choose to cover someone with deception for our own gain, the time will come when we ourselves are covered with a veil of deception. We will not see it coming, as Jacob didn’t. Jacob served Laban seven years to receive Rachel as his wife, and then had to work another seven once the deception of Laban was discovered. Make no mistake, God is not mocked. If you want to be blindsided with grievous deception, then deal in lies and deception yourself and that is surely what you will receive. No matter what your experience, the veil of deception will cover all who willingly fill their life with lies that deceive.
