Grasshoppers become giants

But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.” Numbers 13:30-33

What I find interesting is verse 33 where is says, “we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers”. Some versions say, “like grasshoppers in our own eyes”. These guys could not overcome their fear. They saw themselves as small. What a tragedy! The Israelites were on the brink of conquering a great land, entering in to their promise, but they just could not get there because of fear. Was the taking of the land practical? Not by human standards, but that is just it. We are not limited to human ways – we have the Lord Jesus Christ. The greatest conqueror of all is within us – there is nothing he cannot do. But many times the things we experience in our flesh, our appetites, are an expression of our belief. We say there is no way we can do it, we are but grasshoppers, yet it is never about us. It is about God and what he can and will do. We all struggle with faith because we are human, but our thinking is most of the problem. If we see ourselves or God as small, how can we ever do anything. The Israelites lacked faith, that God would actually do what he said because their circumstances seemed impossible. That lack of faith cost them dearly. If you are a Christian, you serve the God of the impossible. Impossibility is what God does best. As Americans, we lack faith. And because of this, the manifestation of unbelief is everywhere you turn. We live in a generation of hopelessness because our faith is gone. But we are choosing to live this way. There is a better way.

Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:6-9

God is with you wherever you go, so have faith in God for the impossible. Share the greatness of God in all circumstances and watch what he will do!
