I appointed You!

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

The call of Jeremiah is profound. We do not find a boy finding himself in a psychological search, nor do we see a self-made man declaring what he will do for the world. What we find is Yahweh. Eugene Peterson writes, “My identity does not begin when I begin to understand myself. There is something previous to what I think about myself . . . Jeremiah’s life didn’t start with Jeremiah. Jeremiah’s salvation didn’t start with Jeremiah. Jeremiah’s truth didn’t start with Jeremiah.” Adonai Yahweh knew Jeremiah before he was born and he called him to be a prophet to the nations before he existed. We must remember two important things: everything starts with God, he exists outside of time and calls each of us for a divine purpose. Everything starts with him! Two, ALL OF US HAVE A MISSION! When we see the call of Jeremiah we are overwhelmed at the magnitude of it. But all of us are called by God for a specific mission and purpose. One of the problems is that we tend to think “big” missions are for someone else. We are all called for a purpose, but we also get to choose whether we act on it or not. Some of us do not see our call the way Jeremiah did. Did Jeremiah protest? YES! But he followed God’s command to speak the truth. If God has called us but we are not acting, we either have not perceived the call or we do not view God’s call as important. If we fail to obey when called, we are in rebellion. Remember the call did not start with Jeremiah, it started with God, it came before the birth of the prophet.  NO MORE EXCUSES! If you are a Christian, you are called for a purpose. You are uniquely called and God has appointed you!
