Judgment of the Proud

If I were to say to you it is a day of judgment, you would likely respond I need to be more positive and focus on God’s blessings. Just saying it is a day of judgment, while true, is not enough because it is too broad and does not identify the who or why. Those who know God do not fear his correction because they know a God who loves, but also understand that God’s judgment is linked to his justice –  making things that are wrong, right. The wicked are in terror of God’s justice, but those who know that the foundation of God’s throne is justice and righteousness live in peace. In Ezekiel 9 Yahweh makes a distinction between the righteous and wicked and the judgment that is executed is reserved only for the wicked, and the righteous are spared. This is very important – but also does not mean Christians never experience God’s correction. God is very specific and purposeful in his judgments, not arbitrary.

For the day of the Lord of hosts
Shall come upon everything proud and lofty,
Upon everything lifted up—
And it shall be brought low—
Upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up,
And upon all the oaks of Bashan;
Upon all the high mountains,
And upon all the hills that are lifted up;
Upon every high tower,
And upon every fortified wall;
Upon all the ships of Tarshish,
And upon all the beautiful sloops.
The loftiness of man shall be bowed down,
And the haughtiness of men shall be brought low;
The Lord alone will be exalted in that day, Isaiah 2: 12-17

God’s judgment in this case is reserved for the proud. It is a day where only Jesus is exalted and everyone who is lifted up in pride is brought low.

They shall go into the holes of the rocks,
And into the caves of the earth,
From the terror of the Lord
And the glory of His majesty,
When He arises to shake the earth mightily. Isaiah 2:19

The proud shall see the terror and the glory of the Lord. For when we truly see Jesus in all his glory it brings terror to the proud.

Today is a day of judgment, it is a season of judgment – for those who are haughty and prideful, full of selfish deceit and think they cannot be brought low. Today the high mountains become valleys as Jesus rises in his glory and shakes the earth!
